How to Add Hidden Keywords to Your Amazon Listing

If you're selling on Amazon, you're probably keen on optimizing your listing to enhance your product's discoverability. While the product title and description are pivotal, hidden keywords tucked into the search terms field of your listing often get overlooked, yet they play a crucial role in improving discoverability.

Understanding Hidden Keywords

Hidden keywords encompass words related to your product that aren’t visible in your title or description. These include generic terms and synonyms that customers might use during Amazon searches. For instance, someone seeking a grill brush might type “grill cleaning tool” or “grill scraper” in Amazon’s search field. Incorporating hidden keywords broadens the scope to tag your product for numerous related search terms.

Significance of Hidden Keywords

Hidden keywords in the search terms field offer several advantages. They provide Amazon with extra information, making your products more discoverable in search results. Thoughtfully used, these keywords can increase your product's visibility to potential customers.

Another aspect is the control they afford in crafting your product listing’s tone and impression. From a branding standpoint, the choice of words plays a pivotal role in conveying the right message about your product and brand. By using hidden keywords, you can link your product with specific search phrases in Amazon’s system without displaying these keywords to customers, thereby exercising greater control over your brand's message and image.

Best Practices for Hidden Keywords

Do’s:

  • Include abbreviations, alternate names, character names (for books, movies, or branded items), and relevant keywords in the search terms field.

  • Enter multi-word phrases logically, aligning with how customers would search.

  • Separate keywords with single spaces, avoiding punctuation.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid duplicating keywords already used in the title or description; it won't benefit your listing.

  • Steer clear of misleading keywords that may confuse or misdirect customers.

  • Refrain from using brand names you don’t own; it’s misleading and discouraged by Amazon.

Implementing Hidden Keywords

You can add hidden keywords to your product's search terms field by following these simple steps:

  1. Access Seller Central’s Manage Inventory from the Inventory dropdown.

  2. Select the product and click Edit.

  3. Navigate to the Keywords tab and input your hidden keywords into the Search Terms field.

Note on Character Limits

Though the search terms field allows up to 1000 characters, Amazon indexes only the first 250 characters. Hence, focus on the initial 250 characters for your most important keywords.

Translating Searches into Sales

While guiding potential customers to your product is crucial, converting these leads to sales hinges on the quality of your listing. Ensure top-notch product images, a compelling description, and a substantial number of reviews to instill confidence in prospective buyers.
